More About Me (Niels)

Niels van Wieringen Niels van Wieringen

I am Niels van Wieringen, born in 1984. Always inspired by cartoon worlds, I tried to recreate them with my own lego pieces. When I was around 10 years old, my dad gave me my first computer. Fascinated about the things I could do with that, and seeing Wolfenstein 3D, made me realize that you could actually walk around by yourself in created universes. That is why I decided at a young age that I wanted to create those worlds for others to experience.

At age 16 I went to IT college, where the thought of creating computer games never left my mind. After my specialisation in visual design, I came in touch with a teacher that brought a Game Design and Development study under my attention. I applied for that study at the HKU in Utrecht, and was accepted to study there. I specialized myself in 3D art, and after 2 years into college I applied for an internship at the Playlogic Game Factory. I got the chance to work with a lot of talented people over there. This soon ended up in a fulltime job, which resulted in a leading role at the same company in the end.

Describing my passion for computer games and the technology behind it, it's worth to mention that I own every recent console, and almost never skipped one in the past years. You can always get my attention by mentioning Legend of Zelda or Twinsen's Oddysey! In newer 3D games I end up staring at walls and objects wanting to know exactly how they were made, from a technical point of view.

About My Work (portfolio)

Niels van Wieringen Niels van Wieringen

The work on this portfolio website, is a mix of both professional and personal projects I find worth sharing. Most of the personal projects were started to try out and play with new software packages, or to maintain and update certain styles and techniques. Sometimes it was only about having fun.

My goal always is to make things look as good as possible in realtime, to present a honest view of the quality regarding the in-game assets, and thereby the quality of my work. Because of this, all the work presented on this website was rendered in realtime and captured with the use of various game engines. There is no post photoshop work, apart from some obvious additional 2D and 3D artworks. If you have any questions regarding specific projects on my portfolio site, feel free to contact me!
